There’s something about blue and white florals that just feels timeless, like delicate porcelain or a well-loved Delft plate passed down through generations. That’s the vibe I leaned into for this week’s birthday card, and honestly? It turned out sweeter than I imagined.

This card was created as part of Kendra’s Card Challenge, and I had a blast pulling together paper scraps, experimenting with my shaker window, and figuring out how to balance all the strong blues without it feeling too heavy. It’s a mix of rustic textures, playful shapes, and calm, elegant tones—all wrapped into a fun, interactive birthday greeting.

Materials Used

How to Make This Card

  1. The Background Base
I am following sketch #13 from Kendra Card Challenge 18 fairly closely. I followed the dimensions on the sketch to cut my pattern paper and the navy blue cardstock, and adhered them together. Once done, I glued them down to the white card base and trimming off any that hangs over.
  2. Building the Shaker Cupcake
This part was fun! I die-cut the cupcake base from silver mirror cardstock for a fun wrapper for my cupcake. The frosting top was cut from 6 layers of white cardstock and a piece of acetate. This die is rather skinny, so I decided to cut more layers in lieu of foam tape. The result is the same, but more cranking of the die machine! Typically, I add pattern paper or solid cardstock for the background of my shaker. This can adds a fun element to the shaker element without affecting the card as a whole, but I did not want to cover the pattern paper on the card base. The solution? I used vellum instead! Vellum had a layer to make the background less bold, but doesn’t hide it. Win-win! I filled the shaker with silver and blue sparkle dots by Trinity Stamps, because what’s a birthday without sparkle?
  3. Sentiment and Layers
The “Birthday wishes” sentiment was stamped from the Modern Roses stamp set by Gina K Designs, but you can use any birthday sentiment. I inked the stamp with some blue ink on the white cardstock, and cut it out with the coordinating dies. It sits right on the cupcake base, almost like a paper wrapper label.
  4. Embellishments and Final Touches
To balance the card, I added three layered flower embellishments from the Fringe Flower die set made from the silver cardstock and navy blue cardstock. I centred them with white pearls for a little softness.

Final thoughts

Birthday cards are some of my favourite to make. They don’t have to be too themed, and you can play with fun elements like shakers, pop-ups, or interactive flaps. This one came together almost organically, and that’s always the most satisfying kind of craft session, isn’t it?

If you’re participating in Kendra’s Card Challenge too, let me know what you’re working on! Or if you’ve got any blue paper scraps you’re hoarding like I was, maybe it’s time to let them shine.

Happy crafting 💙
